Rash of pedestrian accidents plaguing Charlotte area

A recent accident involving a pedestrian left one man struggling for his life in an area hospital after suffering catastrophic injuries. His accident was only the latest of several recent pedestrian accidents that has left many wondering what can be done to prevent these sorts of incidents in the future.

Brookshire Boulevard in the western part of the city has been the site of the last two accidents. The most recent one happened close to midnight, and it was not clear where the pedestrian was when a motorist drove his vehicle into him. The man got rushed to a nearby hospital.

Another accident on the same street took place a few days earlier. Although the pedestrian in that incident is expected to live, there was no report on the extent or severity of that pedestrian's injuries. The driver of the car involved reportedly fled the scene in the vehicle that struck the pedestrian.

Charlotte, North Carolina, and the rest of the state have seen a noticeable rise in serious pedestrian accidents. To date, the local police have responded to 7 fatal pedestrian accidents, and that number could increase if the victim in the most recent accident does not recover. This number is higher than the number od deaths at this point last year.

Across North Carolina, 35 people have died thus far this year. In 2016, the country saw the highest number of pedestrian deaths in 40 years, and Charlotte and North Carolina both experienced the sad results of this disturbing trend. Overall, the fatality rate increased 11 percent across the country.

Motorists in North Carolina have a duty to look out for pedestrians, especially since pedestrians have no protection against the force of a car or truck. This duty extends even to some situations in which a pedestrian might not be easy to spot. Motorists who through recklessness or even simple carelessness fail in this duty may be responsible to pay compensation to those whom they injure.
