What amount of insurance must truckers carry?

When a Charlotte, North Carolina resident gets injured in any type of motor vehicle accident, half the battle can be finding enough funds, through insurance or otherwise, to actually pay the victim the compensation he or she deserves. After all, even if a judge or jury signs a piece of paper saying a truck driver or company owes compensation, that paper is worth nothing unless it can be converted to cash.

The good news is that, according to federal regulations, truck drivers and other commercial vehicle drivers who want to operate in interstate commerce, that is, outside the borders of North Carolina, have to have certain minimum amounts of liability insurance. Liability insurance covers the cost of paying an injured person compensation should a driver cause an accident through breaking a traffic law or some other act of carelessness.

All motorists in North Carolina are required under state law to have some liability insurance in place, although the amount required many times is simply not enough to pay for all of the losses an injured person suffers. However, these federal minimums are different, as they are substantially higher.

Specifically, most truckers who want to operate in interstate commerce will need at least $750,000 in liability coverage, meaning that if the trucker causes an accident, they can compensate victims up to $750,000 without having to dip in to their own business assets. Some truckers, such as those who transport dangerous chemicals, have to have a higher minimum limit. For busses and other large passenger vehicles, the minimum limit is either $1.5 million or $5 million, depending on the size of the vehicle.

The bottom line is that if a Charlotte resident gets hurt in an accident and an interstate trucker's negligence caused the accident, substantial compensation is most likely available. There should be no impression that the trucking company cannot afford to pay for the losses its driver caused.
